This photo, taken by Dee long before she and David were married, was for the Indian River Audubon Society newsletter, The Limpkin. We were at the 2003 Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival, back when it was still held at the college in Titusville.
The festival has moved to the Raddison at the Port in Cape Canaveral but it is still one of the premiere festivals in the US. The board of directors (including David) and Dee (the field tip coordinator) are now diligently working on putting together the 2025 festival, and registration is slated to open on Oct 1.
Just a few of the amazing things you will get to see at the festival this year are:
Flamingos! After Hurricane Idalia scattered flamingos across the eastern US last year, a small flock settled in on Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River. This year’s festival will feature kayak trips to get up close and personal with some of these iconic Florida birds.
Optics, optics, optics! If you want to upgrade or replace your current optics, the festival will have all the major vendors on hand. You can try before you buy on some of the dozens of planned field trips. When you find what you want, just walk over to Time and Optics and pick it up right at the festival, no need to wait for delivery.
Field trips everywhere! Field trips to Brevard and many surrounding counties, even offshore, will feature special access to areas not normally open to the public and expert guides, both local and from around the country and world to enhance your experience.
Weather! This is a great time to be in Florida. Weather is very mild and generally consistent. The worst you may get is a day of rain followed by a week of sunshine
We hope to see you in January, 2025 at the festival. And, to read more about birds, visit my website at: birdingwithdavidsimpson.com
